Oh ho ho! The holidays ain’t over just yet, kiddies!
Today, Jan. 5, 2018, is National Screenwriters Day! Yes, yes, I know everyone and their mother get a holiday nowadays, but since this one is dedicated to screenwriters, I am going to participate and celebrate.
According to NationalDayCalendar.com, National Screenwriters Day was founded by Hal Croasmun, president of ScreenwritingU.com, in an effort to recognize the talents behind the scripts coming out of the television and film world.
“Often, the screenwriter wrote the movie five years before the director even heard of it,” says Croasmun. “The writer created the story, the characters, the action, the dialogue, the subtext — all those moments we love were written from start to finish, then rewritten 25 times — all before the director came on and made all of it look beautiful.”
So I wanna just take this moment to shout out all the screenwriters out there, both established and aspiring, who are toiling away and filling pages with words, who have knack for world-building, and who have a lot of heat right now. Y’all are the real MVPs.
And special shoutout to screenwriter Mark Sanderson, someone who, over the past year, has really been a voice of motivation and exemplar of true screenwriting success. I mean, just look at his 2017 accomplishments in the tweet below!
Looking back at 2017–published my first book & wrote five #screenplays with four produced. Best year to date and planning on 2018 to be equally good or better. As long as you’re writing – you’re still in the game. #screenwriting #sceenwriter #scriptchat

His book, A Screenwriter’s Journey to Success, is available at Amazon. If you are seriously thinking of pursuing screenwriting, I highly recommend reading it. You should also check out his website, My Blank Page, which is chock-full of invaluable information and resources.
As for me, well, I’m still working on that third Zero Draft Thirty script (which technically means that it’s my first script for 2018, tee hee), but hopefully I’ll have that draft wrapped up by the end of the month.
And then? … Edit, edit, edit. Pitch, pitch, pitch. Write, write, write. The hustle don’t stop, my fellow scribes.
Happy National Screenwriters Day! 🍸
